Veterinary Education Programs
Since 1962, we have trained many of the most prominent leaders in laboratory animal science and comparative medicine. With 100+ veterinary residencies completed over the last 50 years, the Unit for Laboratory Animal Medicine (ULAM) at the University of Michigan is one of the nation’s oldest and most recognized programs for training laboratory animal veterinarians.
Whether you’re a current veterinary student interested in advancing your studies through specialized training in laboratory animal science, or a licensed veterinarian looking for a unique, research-based program that will prepare you for American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) specialty board certification in laboratory animal medicine, our program offers a variety of learning opportunities.

Postdoctoral Clinical Training Program
An intensive three-year program emphasizing clinical medicine, laboratory animal pathology, and animal resource administration and management. This program is officially recognized by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) as meeting the requirements for AVMA specialty board certification in laboratory animal medicine, and is available to veterinary graduates with an interest in laboratory animal medicine.
Veterinary Student Clinical Externships
Offered to third and fourth year veterinary students with an interest in the field of laboratory animal medicine, this 2-3 week training program focuses on key issues in laboratory animal science, including: clinical and preventative medicine, proper research techniques and principles, and the laws and regulations that govern laboratory animal care and use in the United States.
Veterinary Student Summer Fellowships
Available to veterinary students in ANY year of an AVMA-accredited veterinary school program, this 12-week funded fellowship offers students an opportunity to learn about the many aspects of laboratory animal science, including: clinical medicine and research, necropsy and pathology, animal surgery, and animal colony management.
ULAM Veterinary Resident Program Awards
Offered to current ULAM residents only, these awards help support the costs of conducting significant clinical research projects during residency, as well as some of the travel-related costs associated with advancing research through presentations at national conferences, off-campus data collection, and more.
